Stockholm Syndrome as Acceptable Violence and the Representation of Women with Stockholm Syndrome in Movies

On one hand, the problem of violence against women, which is a result of gender inequality, and the media representations that legitimize this violence continue to be the subject of research. On the other hand, Stockholm syndrome, as a socio-psychological condition, has been revealed as an accepted type of violence for women who are exposed to violence. While the media is full of negative examples in the representation of violence against women, it is seen that Stockholm syndrome is frequently used as a part of emotional togetherness and romanticized in the classical narratives of film stories. No study has been found in the field of scientific study dealing with media representations of Stockholm syndrome, and this study was designed to both draw attention to the subject and contribute to filling this gap in the literature. It has been evaluated that the handling of this syndrome, which is presented as a psychological problem, as a sympathetic element in film editing, normalizes violence against women.

Kabullenilmiş Şiddet Olarak Stockholm Sendromu ve Sinema Filmlerinde Stockholm Sendromlu Kadın Temsili

Toplumsal cinsiyet eşitsizliğinin bir sonucu olan kadına yönelik şiddet sorunu ve bu şiddeti meşrulaştıran medya temsilleri araştırmaların konusu olmaya devam etmektedir. Diğer yandan sosyo-psikolojik bir durum olarak Stockholm Sendromu, şiddete maruz kalan kadınlar açısından kabullenilmiş bir şiddet türü olarak ortaya konmuştur. Hali hazırda kadına yönelik şiddetin temsilinde medya olumsuz örneklerle dolu iken, Stockholm Sendromunun da film hikayelerinin klasik anlatılarında duygusal birlikteliğin bir parçası olarak ve romantize edilerek sıklıkla kullanıldığı görülmektedir. Bilimsel çalışma alanında Stockholm Sendromuna yönelik medya temsillerini ele alan herhangi bir çalışmaya rastlanmamış, hem konuya dikkat çekmek hem de litaretüdeki bu boşluğu doldurmaya katkı sağlamak amacıyla bu çalışma tasarlanmıştır. Psikolojik bir sorun olarak ortaya konan bu sendromun film kurgularında sempatik bir unsur olarak ele alınmasının kadına yönelik şiddeti normalleştirdiği değerlendirilmiştir.
